Safety During Nighttime Exercise
Life is often very busy and we all have obligations to fill like taking care of laundry, cleaning the kitchen, and so many other tasks that add up as the week rolls on. This can make finding time to get out and ride or run very difficult, especially in New England this time of year (4:00 sunsets anyone?). This means that you’re inside spinning on a stationary bike, running on a treadmill, or maybe lifting some weights. These things are great to do of course, but getting out at night can afford those willing to take the time to prepare some really exciting opportunities. At Triathlete Sports, we have a great selection of high-visibility/reflective gear and bicycle lights to keep you visible and able to see obstacles or changes in terrain.
For illumination and reflectivity, brands like Garmin, Nathan, and Blackburn offer a range of options and methods of improving your visibility. Garmin’s flagship bicycle light is called the Varia and it features advanced lighting technology that adapts to your speed and ambient light when paired with compatible Garmin computers. The Varia line includes a fantastic innovation that integrates radar into the taillight. When this system is paired to a Garmin cycling computer, you will be alerted to the distance of any approaching rear traffic. How’s that for smart? For more basic but very effective illumination, Blackburn is a great choice. We have an array of different front and rear lights in different levels of brightness to suit the needs of riders and commuters. The Blackburn Local series of lights is very reliable and has rear lights offered in 10, 15, and 20 lumen options. The front lights are offered in 50 and 75 lumens. We also carry sets of front and rear lights!
Nathan specializes in reflectivity and illumination for runners but some of their offerings like the reflective vests and headlamps could easily be used on the bike. Nathan manufactures very sleek and effective reflective wear that looks great and works well. The Reflex Reflective Bands are effective on the wrists or ankles and come in a number of colors. The LightFit, Streak, and Bandolier vests are form fitting, highly adjustable, and won’t feel bulky or flap around as you ride or run. They also offer unique lighting solutions like the LightBender Armband that goes around the upper arm and has a three color LED. The Nathan LightSpur is intriguing because it is a light that attaches securely to the back of a runners shoe. The headlamps manufactured by Nathan come in a few different levels of brightness. From least to most bright the headlamps are the Neutron Fire (115 lumen), Neutron Fire RX which features a reflective head strap and a slightly more powerful light (160 lumen), the Nebula Fire (192 lumen), and then the Halo Fire (280 lumen) that features a similar reflective strap around the wearer’s head. These headlamps are easy to use and feature multiple power outputs and strobe functions.
Nathan’s hydration solutions are also made with reflectivity, visibility, and insulation in mind! The Fire and Ice 20oz water bottle is insulated to keep liquid cool in warm temperatures or to keep liquid from freezing in cold temperatures. The SpeedShot Plus Handheld water bottle is a great option for a 12oz bottle because it has an ergonomic strap that holds the bottle in your hand for easy access during your run. Both of these bottles feature 3M reflective trim which is highly visible in low-light conditions. Nathan’s IceSpeed 18oz Insulated bottle includes an “IceCutter Cap” that prevents your water bottle from freezing shut. So if you’re tired of logging treadmill miles or spinning in one place, check out Triathlete Sports selection of reflective gear and lights today!
